Istanbul Through The Eyes Of The Old
Workshop Title
Urban Transformation in Istanbul through the Eyes of Witnesses
Objective
To reveal the effects of urban transformation on Istanbulites by addressing urban transformation in the context of the last 100 years of Istanbul’s history with its historical, cultural, social and economic aspects, to reveal the effects of the city’s transformation on Istanbulites, and to present a framework of measures that can be taken to prevent environmental, cultural and social traumas based on lived experiences with representatives of established families who have lived in Istanbul for several generations, who think about Istanbul, and who add value to Istanbul through their writings and productions. The change of the city passes before the old families like a film strip. In this context, we will examine how the changes and innovations in Istanbul’s urban life create a perception in the eyes of the old families and the radical changes in the city in terms of urban, environmental, sociological and traditional.
Goals
To record the last 100 years of Istanbul’s history through the testimonies of people who live in Istanbul and create value for Istanbul,
To show what kind of social and cultural effects the transformation of the city has on the city dwellers who witness this transformation,
To propose a perspective on the issues to be considered in Istanbul and other historical cities for urban studies in line with the suggestions of former Istanbulites in order to preserve the texture and memory of the city,
Present the results of the interviews as a report to the public, academia, and relevant institutions.
Significance and Rationale
Planning and architectural practices in local government activities ignore the cultural, social, and historical integrity of the city and treat the city as a physical space divided into buildings and functions.
In particular, the feelings of families who have lived in the same city for several generations in the face of such a rapid transformation of the city, and what they will tell in this context, will make it
